Lens Index Explained: 1.50 vs 1.56 vs 1.60 vs 1.67 vs 1.74
Lensmaster Knowledge Centre • 25 September 2026

The lens index describes how efficiently the material bends light. Higher index materials bend light more, so the same prescription needs less material — meaning thinner, lighter lenses.
1.50 Standard — everyday prescriptions, baseline material. 1.56 Thin & Light — low to moderate powers, better aesthetics. 1.59 Thin — moderate powers, slimmer profile. 1.60 Thinner — moderate to higher powers, reduced thickness (like the LoRef 1.60 MR-8). 1.67 Extra Thin — higher powers, significant thickness reduction. 1.74 Ultra Thin — very high powers, thinnest profile.
Thinner, lighter, better aesthetics — but also higher MRP. Match the index to your actual power: there's no benefit paying for 1.74 on a -1.00 prescription.
